About Us

The Southeast Alaska Tribal Ocean Research (SEATOR) network was formed by the Sitka Tribe of Alaska (STA) in September 2013 to coordinate Tribal responses to the array of environmental threats affecting subsistence resources. SEATOR partners monitor local phytoplankton to check for harmful algal blooms, collect seawater samples to test for changes in ocean chemistry, and ship shellfish to the STA Environmental Research Lab to test for paralytic shellfish toxins. The SEATOR network is committed to increasing safe access to traditional resources, reducing human health risks, and proactively monitoring for harmful changes to the marine environment.
